I just returned from a week long trip with my boy. We took a short plane ride up to Santa Cruz to visit family for the 4th of July. We go every year and this trip is always a highlight of my summer. I love the feeling coming home, remember old times and making new memories in these places with my son. Since this time is so beloved to me I wanted to share some of my favorite moments and tips of traveling with a busy toddler along our summer travels.
I get asked a lot now how do you get all those pictures of you and Waylon together everyday, do you have a personal photog following you around? Nope I have a this awesome new tool called a Shutterball; it fits nicely in your hand and connects to an app on your iPhone and will snap your pic every time you click it. I love it! It’s change the way I take pictures and allows me to capture those everyday moments with my son.
While on the plane the best tool I have in my bag to entertain my boy is the iPad. I always load it with 2-3 of his favorite movies and it usually holds his attention for awhile. Waylon was so excited to get on the airplane it was a struggle to keep him from running down the wrong terminal onto an earlier departing plane. So I let him run around the airport as I looked for other toddlers for him to play with and pointed out all the fuel trucks and baggage cars I could find.
Here are some images of us playing in my childhood bedroom where I found an old letter I wrote at camp to my grandparents and Barbie! Oh how much fun we had together.
If you’re ever in the Santa Cruz area stop at Verve Coffee Roasters. It’s by far my favorite coffee ever!
Pretty much standard at the beach these days. Long ago were the days of laying out and relaxing with a book but I wouldn’t change it. It’s so fun seeing him discover the joy of smashing sandcastles and sharing sand toys. Side note, just a few months ago Waylon was not digging the beach and would scream every time he touched sand; now we can’t get him to leave! We were just persistent in taking him to the beach and kept showing him how much fun it was to dig in the sand eventually he caught on.
Independence day was pretty perfect (minus the fact that my husband had to stay home) and Waylon’s mind was blown by the fireworks.
We always make time to support small business. Also how beautiful are these doors? They belong to a house that is located near the famous Pleasure Point surf spot. We had to stop and stare.
I love to run and I love nothing more than running in the Nisene Forest. In Aptos, Ca near Santa Cruz, there are many paths and trails available to hikers, runners and bikers; it’s pretty heavenly here.
I carved out some time to go shopping in downtown Santa Cruz. I’m totally a fan of small businesses but I’m also a fan of a good deal. I purchased this awesome jumpsuit and maxi dress from the new (huge) Forever 21 store they opened in downtown SC and they both were under $30!
The Del Mar theater is a gem and also in downtown Santa Cruz. I had a night out with my mom to see “The Fault in our Stars” and balled my eyes out for 2 hours.
The last morning on our trip we ate breakfast at Paula’s which meant we got to eat our eggs and waffles in this bitchin’ camper van! I love this pic because he looks like a board teenager and he’s only 2.
Traveling with a toddler is never easy; naps are off, tantrums get thrown and sleep is missed by all. Through it all I’ve learned to not expect anything but enjoy the good moments because that is what makes it all worthwhile.
